I just began working for an entertainment company about a month ago and have since been charged with researching all the details required to start up a freely distributed magazine in Los Angeles. If anyone has ever spent hours searching and reading and not quite finding what you are looking for on the internet (which I am sure you all have...), then I suspect you will understand my frustration. I am new to the entertainment and magazine business, and am at a loss for how to go about the business. The content of the magazine will focus on undiscovered talent in the LA area, i.e. actors, directors, dancers, musicians, writers, artists, etc. who would benefit from being in a publication that allows them to be seen and their works to be noticed. At present, my concern is finding businesses to advertise in our publication so we can keep funding it. How do I go about finding the best target audience and, in turn, find our target advertisers? Does the number of magazines distributed and the locations we distribute to affect who will or will not advertise within our publication?
Any feedback is appreciated! Thank you!

Hi Lynn. Your more savvy advertisers will want to know how many copies you are putting out and where they are going. They will likely pay more to advertise if more copies are going to the right people. The obvious people to advertise, it seems to me, are the artists themselves who want to be seen; and the places to distribute are to the companies that would hire them. Conversely, the companies looking for actors etc might want to advertise to attract them for auditions and employment. In thinking it through, think of who will be actually reading the magazine, based on its anticipated editorial, and who wants to reach those readers. I could see this publication as being a wonderful resource.
One thing you might want to consider is to begin by focusing on classified ads. These will be more within reach (financially) of the artists, and more what potential employers are used to paying for help wanted. Local, classified-ad-rich publications can do very well, and so might yours if there isn't something in that niche in your market at present.
Good luck and please do let us know how this works out for you. We'll look forward to seeing the links to your digital version as well.
