Anderson News: Gone but Not Forgotten

So Anderson News Company is now suing the major publishers and national distributors.Named as defendants in the lawsuit are Bauer, AMI, Hachette, Rodale, Time and Time/Warner, Curtis, Kable, Hudson News and the News Group. The suit alleges that the defendants conspired to destroy Anderson’s business in order to establish a monopoly with the remaining distributors and wrest control of magazine pricing from the retailers, returning it to the publishers.Meaning, as I take it, that a large…See More

Thoughts on our industry meltdown--the ultimate showdown (of ultimate destiny)

So far, the year 2009 has represented for magazine publishing, in the words of a popular song, "The ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny. Good guys, bad guys and explosions, as far as the eye can see--and only one will survive (I wonder who it will be?)"Early this year publishers and wholesalers faced off, with the very survival of some of the channel partners is at stake. After many years of working together, partnering on newsstand distribution, grumbling, finger pointing, and cooperating we…See More

Is Five Million Enough?

Has the time finally come where we all start taking our internet security practices more seriously? It's hard to tell. When the Heartbleed Bug chomped into all our favorite websites, taking our usernames, passwords, credit card information, and other personal information, it seemed like the end of the world. For about a minute.

After the initial hysteria wore off we gritted our teeth, changed our passwords, or looked happily at the list of which sites hadn't been affected and…

St. Louis-Based HDA Inc. Turns Back Magazines

In a recent blog post, I took a look at the problems that HDA has been facing. A major debt restructuring has led to unsettling occurrences, such as HDA refusing 57,000 copies of a magazine with no explanation. Stranger still, HDA employees showed up to work on Monday to find the doors of their company closed. Bob Ketterer, HDA Inc.'s president, CEO and chairman,…

Swedish Perspective on Print Publishing

"If you don't do anything different," Peter Fagerstrom of Swedish distributor Svenska Interpress said, "you're not going to see a difference."

The crisis in print that we’re experience here in the U.S.  is resonating around the world, and different markets are reacting in different ways. At the recent Distripress Congress in Toronto, Fagerstrom was almost Shakespearian in his approach, determined to take arms against the sea of troubles, and…

Retailers Ask Publishers to Re-Embrace Print

The past week has been, for me, quite remarkable.

I just got back from Distripress Toronto, where about 600 delegates from almost 60 countries met to discuss the state of the business and their place in the business.

On the way back through the Toronto airport, I waited at the gate where lovely bright workstations provided plenty of places for everyone to plug in their laptaps and phones and power up.  Ipad stations were…

Hi Linda,

Thanks. Sherin did spread the word here at Yankee! I have no good pics of me but might have to dig one up because I really don't like my manly silhouette.

Hi Linda, it's an interesting concept. I'd like to explore this more fully to see what kind of dialog we can create about SOLUTIONS and some just for fun.
